Constantly hiring and firing low level units with +40 or +110 XP room extensions will let you accumulate some Tier 1 units that actually generate gold. If you start in the Northeast (dwarf area), then you can deal with gold issues by levelling Dwarf units with the Gold Affinity upgrade.
